Workshop on Elder Abuse

A workshop on elder abuse for social security officers, presidents and secretaries of the island’s elders’ associations, health workers, health professionals and members of the police force was organized on 28 February 2024 in Baladirou. Many people are unaware of the prevalence and various forms of elder abuse. This workshop provided an opportunity to educate attendees about the signs, risk factors and consequences of elder abuse, enabling them to recognize and respond to cases more effectively.

Elder Abuse Training Workshops provide officers and responders with the skills needed to identify, investigate and respond to elder abuse cases. This includes understanding legislation, conducting interviews, and working collaboratively with other agencies. The workshops facilitate a comprehensive and effective response, involving law enforcement, social services, health professionals and legal experts. They empower victims by educating them and providing support services.

At the end of this workshop, there was a ceremony for the presentation of certificates and shields to the presidents of the associations of the elderly which was created in 1985. This event was an opportunity to pay tribute to our seniors for their dedication and commitment over the years. The presentation of these distinctions symbolizes the community’s recognition of those who have contributed to the development of the association.

This ceremony highlighted the hard work and passion of the first members of the senior citizens’ association. Their dedication and involvement have been essential for the development and sustainability of the association. In awarding these certificates and shields, we wanted to express our gratitude to these pioneers who laid the solid foundation on which our senior community is built today.
