Welfare and Elderly Persons Protection Unit (WEPPU)
The Legal Framework
The Welfare and Elderly Persons’ Protection Unit was set up in September 2006 after the promulgation of the Protection for Elderly Persons Act 2005. The main objective of the Act is to set up a legal and administrative framework for greater protection and assistance to elderly persons. The Act also empowers officers to summon perpetrators and failing to attend may lead to prosecution and, if found guilty, is liable to fine and imprisonment
Objectives of WEPPU
- To ensure, promote and sustain the physical, psychological, emotional, social and economic protection of elderly persons;

To ensure, promote and sustain the well-being of elderly persons so that they are able to play a meaningful part in society” (The Protection of Elderly Persons Act 2005, Point 3.3).
